Clothing is one of the easiest (and most fun) places to start. Instead of tossing items that are faded, stained, or torn, I ask myself: What else could this become?
- Old T-Shirts – the softest cleaning rags or dusting cloths
- Flannel Shirts- cozy pillow covers or dog toys (Abby loves these!)
- Jeans with holes– denim patch projects, tote bags, seat covers
- Sweaters– mittens, mug cozies, or pillow covers
- Sheets- can be turned into braided carpets, cleaning cloths, curtains are other clothing!
Even the smallest fabric scraps can become stuffing for pet beds. They can also be used for reusable makeup remover pads if you happen to wear makeup. It feels good to know that something once destined for the trash can now serve another purpose.

My Go-To Tool Kit for Repurposing Clothing
If you’re going to start giving old clothes new life, a small sewing kit is your best friend. I like having one that includes sharp scissors, strong thread, and needles. It should also have buttons, safety pins, and a small tape measure. This kit provides everything you need for quick fixes or creative projects.
This compact sewing kit on Amazon is my favorite. It’s lightweight and travel friendly. It fits in a drawer or glove box. I’ve used it to patch jeans, hem curtains, and even make a quick dog toy for Abby! I hemmed a weighted blanket at work. Otherwise, a coworker would have sent it to the trash!

Around the Home: Everyday Repurposing Wins
Once you start, you’ll see possibilities everywhere:
- Glass jars- perfect for storing cotton swabs, seeds, food, seasonings
- Old towels- use them for washing your car, door gaps in winter, or pet grooming
- Worn-out baskets- line them with fabric and use as storage bins or house plant liners
Not only does repurposing reduce waste, but it has helped to spark my creativity again. I am starting to see that the items are not “used up” but are still full of potential. Best of all, on top of all of this I am saving money! I am not spending on new items that I think I need. I have the ability to make do and repurpose something I have into something I may want.

My Challenge to You
Before you throw something away this week, pause for five seconds and ask:
“Is there another way I could use this?”
Maybe that sweater becomes a pillow, that jar becomes a vase, or that habit of reusing becomes a lifestyle that feels lighter- and just a little more good-natured!
